What’s Trending In Kitchen Design

We carefully track trends in the kitchen and bath industry to help assure that our clients’ new kitchens and baths are not only on point but are capable of withstanding the test of time. Here are the top mid-year trends in our region.

Rich Mixed Colors

The kitchen and bath industry often follows fashion trends, and 2019 is no exception to the rule. Homeowners who have recently renovated their kitchen in Denver made distinctive design statements by opting for a mix of different colors, textures and finishes. While white kitchens continue to be a choice for many, that option is not as popular as in the past. Many of our clients recently choose cabinets painted in rich colors, and that trend is borne nationally as blue and green cabinetry have greatly increased in popularity.

Open Shelving

Increased demand for more modern space is transforming design as an increasing number of clients opt for open shelving systems. Open shelves replace the lion’s share or all upper wall cabinets to provide clean lines and a minimalist look.

When our clients opt for open shelves in place of upper wall cabinets or more streamlined looks, we often recommend taking advantage of organizational accessories to avoid countertop clutter. Commonly specified storage accessories may include plate racks, spice racks, pull-out drawers, and other organizing tools that provide designated places for small appliances, plates, glassware, cutlery, knives, and other kitchen gadgets and accessories.

Color My Sink World

The days of having to choose between stainless steel or white kitchen sink are over. Composite sinks that resist heat damage and scratching come in a rainbow of colors, sizes and configurations that can meet almost any style preference or design parameter. Sinks increasingly are serving as focal points with material options that span the imagination.

Gold Rush

Metallic finishes continue to command consumer interest. All shades of gold on faucets, instant hots, pot fillers and other plumbing fixtures are hot. Recent introductions include rose gold, bright gold, black gold, polished gold and rose-colored bronzes.

Two Is Better Than One

Because the kitchen serves as the most important room in the home and serves multiple purposes for homeowners, we’ve noticed a new demand for multiple kitchens. The main kitchen serves as the dining, entertaining, gathering, homework area, etc., and a second kitchen serves as the primary space for appliances, meal preparation, cooking, and cleanup.

The Right Light

Homeowners are more frequently taking the use of pendants over islands up several notches by specifying a group of mini-pendants instead of a chandelier or having a row of pendants installed at different heights.

The most popular kitchen layout among U.S. homeowners undertaking a renovation is L-shaped, according to a recent Houzz.com survey. Nearly 50 percent of homeowners changed or plan to change the layout of the kitchen as part of their remodeling plan. U-shaped kitchens were the second most popular layout followed by a galley layout.

Open floor plan kitchens are another significant trend among homeowners remodeling their kitchens. Many of our clients agree, opening up their kitchen space to other parts of their home is one of the most requested services. The Houzz survey found more than 50 percent of homeowners opting for opening the kitchen to other living areas, while 18 percent choose to open their kitchen space to outdoor spaces.

The average size of a kitchen remodel was 230 square feet.

A reported 40 percent of homeowners opted to increase the size of their kitchen as part of their remodel. More significant than size is style. The top priority among homeowners in the survey and among our clientele is to create a kitchen that is both stylish and beautiful. That’s the number one reason why our clients depend on our showroom. We know how to ask the right questions to determine wants, needs, and dreams. The most popular style of kitchen renovations was transitional, followed by contemporary and farmhouse.

A well-designed kitchen is an organized kitchen.

The greatest source of buyer’s remorse among our clients is overlooking storage and accessories that make the kitchen easier to use and more beautiful. The top built-in and specialty storage amenities specified for American kitchens according to the survey are as follows:

  • Pullout waste or recycling cabinets (67 percent)
  • Cookie sheet/tray organizers (55 percent)
  • Deep drawer organizers (45 percent)
  • Pull/swing out trays/shelves (44 percent)
  • Lazy Susans (44 percent)
  • Spice organizers (42 percent)
  • Cutlery organizers (40 percent)
  • Utensil organizers (35 percent)
  • Pots and pan organizers (34 percent)
  • Small appliance garage/drawers (24 percent)
  • Wine and/or bar cabinets (20 percent)
  • Pull out corner drawers (19 percent)
  • Dish organizers (18 percent)

Cabinet and Countertop Trends that Turned our Heads

Kitchen Innovation 2017 JM Kitchen Denver

Innovative Storage

Innovative storage was a dominant trend we saw at KBIS. Numerous manufacturers are making kitchens more functional and easy to use.  We saw creative wine storage options, drawers in drawers, toe-kick drawers, matching SKUs for door inserts that help organize knives, utensils, cutlery, and other kitchen gadgets. There are so many bells and whistles that will expand the functionality of your kitchen space!

Multi-Function Kitchen Islands

There’s a reason kitchen islands are wildly popular and have become the centerpiece of many of the kitchens we design. For nearly 40 years, islands have withstood the test of time and are largely responsible for making open concept designs work. Islands are often the focal point of a new kitchen. Employing contrasting colors and sometimes unique countertop materials enable homeowners in Denver to put their stamp on their new kitchen.

Kitchen cabinet manufacturers understand that many kitchen islands serve multiple purposes.  One of our manufacturers unveiled a floating island that doubles as a home office. The island featured power, USB connectivity, file storage and space for a printer all hidden underneath a movable countertop that can double as an eating area or working desk.  We even saw drawer inserts designed to hold Keurig coffee pods.

Oversized drawers as long as 72 inches lined in leather or accented in leather were featured throughout the show. Use of mixed materials – leather, stone, wood and metals  – is an emerging trend that provides our clients with an almost unlimited array of options to make a distinct design statement in their homes.

Our customers will have lots of new choices in paint colors this year as many manufacturers are offering some hot new colors not only in cabinets but also in sinks and faucetry.

Grey is still hot!

Grey is still hot with many cabinet manufacturers. Several were showing different twists and shades of grey at the show.  Many of the new greys had a purplish tint. Use of pops of color with blue/green, mustard tones and brownish reds were quite popular.

Kitchen Lighting

Another stand out trend was interior cabinet lighting. It has definitely grown up.

Rectangles were the predominate shape with loads and loads of floating shelves.  Many of the displays incorporated the use of planters within home interiors.

Countertop Innovation

One of our major countertop partners had a wowing display of new products.  One display featured a customized gas burner that can be integrated directly into the counter without needing a glass or stainless surface.

We returned from KBIS with many, many ideas that will help you create a dream home.  If you are interested in learning more about the latest trends in kitchen and bath design.
